King Viserys I, a well-meaning but conflict-averse ruler, makes the bold and controversial decision to name his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir to the Iron Throne — a choice that cuts against tradition and immediately stirs resentment among the lords of Westeros. Rhaenyra's position is further complicated by the birth of Viserys's sons through his second wife, Alicent Hightower, who was once Rhaenyra's closest friend. Over the course of the season, that friendship curdles into rivalry, as Alicent comes to believe her own sons have a stronger claim to the throne. The season jumps forward in time on several occasions, aging up the key players and deepening the fractures between the two women and their respective factions. Accusations of illegitimacy, secret marriages, political maneuvering, and personal betrayals pull the court apart, and by the season's end, King Viserys has died and Alicent's son Aegon has been crowned king in a hastily arranged coup — denying Rhaenyra the throne she was promised. With Rhaenyra rallying support from Dragonstone, the stage is set for a Targaryen civil war, and the season closes with the first devastating act of violence confirming that the Dance of the Dragons has truly begun.
